Sri Lanka – huge rock and tiny elephants #6

Sri Lanka - huge rock and tiny elephants #6

On the weekend two other volunteers and I visited Lion Rock and Minneriya National Park.

Hemantha, the operation manager in Green Lion, recommended a jeep driver, who would take us to the Lion Rock and Elephants Safari. We took a tuk-tuk to the center, a public bus to Dambulla and met our wide smiling driver in Dambulla.

The Lion Rock is a huuuuge, surreal, impressive rock in Sigiriya.

After that, we continued to Minneriya National Park and watched elephants, buffalos, different birds in their natural environment. It’s nice to see them this way and not behind the bars. We saw a month old elephant sucking his mom’s milk. We saw 2 male elephants fighting. The photos and videos are not of the good quality and they don’t reflect the reality.

The best time to visit the park is around 11-12 a.m. At this time we were one of two jeeps, but when we departed around 13-14 it was not clear who watches whom: the people or the elephants.

We were warned not to leave anything outside the backpack because monkeys are faster us. At some moment I didn’t find my mobile, thought the monkeys are really fast and was saying goodbye to the un-backed-up photos. Our driver was as much as sad as me, maybe even more. Finally, he found the mobile under my hat 🙂

The next day was just relaxing day in the city, having a lunch in Secret Alley, a nice veg place recommended by Happy Cow app and reading on the bench near the Kandy Lake with other volunteers.
